Image Classification with ml5.js and p5.js

Over the weekend I decided to do something that had been on my to-do list for quite some time: follow along with some Coding Train YouTube videos about ml5.js. Daniel Shiffman’s videos are really well done—fun, approachable, and creative.

A specific tutorial worth trying is Image Classification with ml5.js (the actual hands-on tutorial starts 10 minutes in, but the intro material is helpful context).

His videos use p5js.org, an online IDE and framework for creative coding and interactive art that makes simple drawing operations effortless. Combining p5.js with ml5.js makes it very fast and easy to build impressive experiments, and it really highlights how many compute-efficient models can run completely within JavaScript in a web browser.
