Adding AI Dialogue to GameCube Animal Crossing
My wife and I are big fans of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing. We first got into it years ago on the GameCube and, like many others, revisited it when New Horizons came out on the Nintendo Switch. If you aren’t familiar, it’s a wonderfully eccentric game where you casually stroll around a small village, digging up fossils, decorating your house, and chatting with quirky animal neighbors.
That background made me love reading about Josh Fonseca integrating an LLM into the 20-year-old GameCube game. He hooked an LLM up to create dynamic character dialogue on the fly. It was done via emulator rather than original hardware, but the reverse-engineering work and dialogue injection are still remarkably impressive.
He also posted a YouTube video explaining the project—though be prepared for some of the most memorable sunglasses you’ll ever see.
