Building a Minimalist Coding Agent

Mario Zechner wrote a great writeup on building his own coding agent as both a learning experience and out of frustration with existing tools constantly changing behavior and piling on unnecessary features.

The article is an interesting deep dive into the technical challenges, including abstracting various LLM provider APIs while retaining data critical for agent performance (such as thinking tokens when supported).

I especially found the design of pi-coding-agent compelling because of its simplicity. There’s also an interesting insight in the benchmark section showing that his simple agent performs remarkably well, and that another even simpler agent actually outperformed his. Sometimes simpler architectures really do win out.
